What is cellulite?

Cellulite affects almost all women. This is because their connective tissue, which surrounds the warming and protective fat cells, is softer and looser than in men. Over time, the elasticity of the elastic fibers decreases, and more fat accumulates in the cells of the subcutaneous tissue. These can increase up to ten times their original volume and gradually push through the weak connective tissue to the surface of the skin. This creates orange peel skin, the typical appearance of cellulite. Commonly affected areas are thighs, buttocks, hips, or upper arms. Significant weight fluctuations, lack of exercise, and hormonal changes can accelerate the process.

There is no miracle cure for firm skin. You can positively influence the appearance of your skin noticeably and visibly through holistic care, exercise, and a balanced diet.

What role do hormones play?

Estrogens promote the elasticity of connective tissue and influence the accumulation of fat cells. When hormone levels change, for example during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, it can lead to more water retention in the body, which also increases the tendency to cellulite. This can also occur in connection with the menstrual period or taking the pill.

Cellulite? Cellulitis? Lipedema?

What is the difference?

Cellulite, also known as orange peel skin, is a skin change where fat cells push through the connective tissue and create a dimpled structure on the skin surface.
Cellulitis, on the other hand, is a bacterial inflammation of the subcutaneous tissue that can be caused by an infection and is accompanied by redness, swelling, and pain.
Lipedema is a chronic fat distribution disorder that mainly occurs in women and is characterized by a symmetrical fat accumulation on the legs and arms, often associated with pain and swelling.
Cellulite is recognized by the typical dimpled skin structure, while cellulitis is noticeable by inflammatory symptoms such as redness and pain. Lipedema is characterized by disproportionate fat distribution and pressure sensitivity. A doctor's visit is advisable if cellulitis or lipedema is suspected, as these conditions require medical treatment. Cellulite is usually a cosmetic problem and does not require medical treatment.

Four Stages of Cellulite

  • Mild Cellulite
The skin is still smooth when standing and lying down. When pinched, the first skin irregularities appear.
  • Moderate Cellulite
Slight skin dimples become visible when muscles are tensed. The skin tissue reacts sensitively to pressure.
  • Severe Cellulite
The orange peel skin is clearly visible and often occurs together with more or less pronounced stretch marks.
  • Very Severe Cellulite
Clearly palpable and visible, hardened nodules and deep stretch marks.
The most promising approach is a holistic one, based on three pillars: massage, nutrition, exercise.
